The magic of The Nutcracker returns to the Bama Theatre this holiday season, as the Tuscaloosa Community Dancers (TCD) proudly present their 53rd annual production of the beloved ballet from December 12-15. A cherished holiday tradition in West Alabama since 1971, The Nutcracker continues to captivate audiences of all ages, bringing the community together for a magical journey into Clara’s dream world.
Led by Artistic Director Alden McShan and Executive Director and Costume Director Joyce Phillips, this year’s production features over 100 dancers from local dance studios including The Dance Centre, Ballet Arts & Fitness, and Druid City Ballet. With a dazzling combination of local talent and exciting guest artists, the 2024 Nutcracker promises to be an unforgettable experience.
Guest Artists:
Headlining this year’s guest artist lineup is Jennifer Lauren Quarles, principal dancer with the renowned Miami City Ballet. Quarles, who is returning to her Tuscaloosa roots, will perform the iconic role of the Sugar Plum Fairy, accompanied by her partner, Rainer Krenstetter, dancing as the Cavalier. This season will mark a bittersweet moment, as Quarles has announced her retirement, making this her final performance with us on the Bama Theatre stage. Joining them is Carlos Guerra, co-founder of Dimensions Dance Theatre and former Miami City Ballet dancer, who will take on the role of the mysterious Herr Drosselmeyer. Local theater performers will also be joining the cast to perform as the parents in the lively Party Scene and in the role of the Nutcracker Prince, bringing a new level of energy and excitement to the performance.
Community Cast:
This year’s production features a talented cast of dancers from across the community. Macy Hudson, a 7th grader at Echols Middle School, daughter of Beth and Jake Hudson, will grace the stage as Clara, while her mischievous younger brother Fritz will be portrayed by Sarah Nelle Lasseter, a 5th grader at Verner Elementary School, daughter of Caroline and Lake Lasseter. The 2024 production also showcases the talents of seven graduating seniors: Ava Cicatiello, Northridge High School, Kaydee Hadden, Tuscaloosa County High School, Lily Anna Loveland, Northridge High School, Wells McEntyre, Northridge High School, Annamarie Messina, Northridge High School, Maggie Shewmake, Tuscaloosa County High School, and Regan Winchester, Northridge High School. Each of these seniors will take on various important roles in the production, including the Mouse King, the Nutcracker, Snow Queen, Dew Drop Fairy, Arabian, the Maid, Soldier Doll, Snow Corps, Spanish, and Demi Flower Soloist. These dancers have been an integral part of TCD and will be bidding farewell in this year’s Nutcracker, making their performances even more special.
